Week One Prime Time Players

Game One "Prime Time Player" Nominees

ASHTON RENSHAW #8 Sr. Safety

Ashton shown here returning an interception had a great game with a pick, several big hits and a punt return for TD that was called back.

CAMERON BROWN #19 Sr. CB

Cameron had 2 picks and anchored the Legacy Secondary. Always around the ball Cameron came into the game with an problem ankle and had a great game.

TRAVIS SEARS #5 Sr. WR

#5 almost wasn't #5 as Travis' Jersey could not be found until late Thursday night. Travis had 3 catches for 77 yds. Including (Left) the 25 yd TD to seal the game.

THE LIGHTNING "D"

Without a broken play the Lightning D would have pitched a shout out. The "D" held Mountain Range to 17 net yds on the ground and kept us in the game.

HOWARD "KIP" SMITH #7 Jr. PK

What a weapon! Kip nailed a 37 yd FG, 4 extra points, and booted every KO out of the stadium. Kip was also 2 for 3 on "scoreboard shots" on extra points in the West End zone.

COACH V

As the Rocky Mountain News pointed out... V could have blown a gasket at half-time time and been totally justified. His approach at half paid off as the Lightning came out and took care of business

Congratulations to all of the Lightning "Prime Time" players in week one. Check back every week throughout the season to see who is nominated.

Tailgating Becoming Lightning Tradition

Larry Kasa fires up the grill & Lightning Moms
get ready to cheer at the opening tailgate party

If you missed the first tailgate party of the year don't despair the next one is only a week away. The Lightning fans were out early on Friday night beating the team to North Stadium to prepare for the game. Now an established tradition Lightning tailgating is growing every week. Lightning boosters look for e-mails during the week on times and location for our tailgates. If you are not a Lightning booster just plan on getting to the stadium an hour and a half before the game and look for the party. See you next week as the Lightning takes on Ft. Collins.

Front Range up for grabs as Poudre, Rocky Mountain & Fairview all look strong in big wins

The Lightning's march through the Front Range league got off to a good start on Friday night with a 31-7 win over Mountain Range. However, several Front Range teams had big wins in week 1.

Newcomer Fairview looked strong in beating Loveland 44-14 - Last years Champion Poudre looks like they are planning on repeating as they shut out Boulder 28-0 - Rocky Mountain's high octane passing offense was in mid year form as they racked up 315 yards in the air beating Horizon 34-24.

Follow the Lightning here and put on your calendars these big upcoming games: Sept 12 @ Rocky Mountain (Ft Collins), October 3rd @ Fairview (Boulder), October 17th @ Poudre (Ft Collins).

Lightning Beats Mountain Range 31-7 with 21 point 3rd Quarter Surge

Colton Chavez breaks loose for 8 of his 95 yards in Legacy's
31-7 Win over Front Range newcomer Mountain Range

After a sluggish start the Lightning exploded with a 21 point 3rd quarter Friday night beating Mountain Range 31-7. As reported in the Rocky Mountain News, Coach V took a "subdued approach" at halftime, "We just told them at half it was simple, we were just beating ourselves right now". The lightning had 10 penalties for 85 yds in the first half alone.

Coach V's approached worked as the Lightning came out on fire in the 3rd quarter with 21 quick points to put the game away. Next up for the Lightning is Ft. Collins next Friday night at North Stadium.

Coach V - Lightning Players get first look at Invesco Field

Coach V and Coach Sears lead Lightning players (from right) Bryson Romero, Nate Pickens, Ashton Renshaw, Cameron Brown, Travis Sears, and Beau Trigsted onto Invesco Field at Mile High last Friday night to play at halftime of the Broncos / Packers game.

As part of the NFL HS 7 on 7 team our boys teamed with Bear Creek and travelled to New Orleans, LA this summer and placed 3rd in the 16 team NFL national tournament.

Congratulations to these Lightning players... Hopefully the next time Coach V takes them to Invesco it will be for State Title on November 29th.

Lightning Picked as one of 10 teams to challenge for the state title by Scout.com

In a recently published article Jeff Stroud of Scout.com highlights the Colorado 5A "Top 10" teams to take a run at the title. Here's what Jeff has to say about Legacy...

Legacy
Great defense and a great set of skill players, working with a quarterback who may be ready for a breakout season, highlights the Lightning. The one area of concern is an offensive line that returns only one starter. Nick Kasa and Ryan Paulson may get reps on the offensive line, but will that hurt their play as bookend D-ends?

Prediction: If the offensive line gels, look out for a Legacy run.

Game 1 Preview: Mountain Range Mustangs

Take 136th East from Legacy High to Huron and take a right... 2 miles away you'll find Mountain Range High. The Lightning and Mustangs have never played and start what promisses to be a great rivalry Friday night. Mountain Range makes the jump from 3A (where they went 8-2 last year) to 5A, but they are returning 21 of 22 starters... North stadium promises to be a packed house filled with plenty of electricity... SEE YOU THERE EARLY IF YOU WANT A SEAT...

Here is the Denver Post report on the Mustangs:

Mountain Range, 2007: 8-2 (3A); Coach: Joe Bravo

The Mustangs are making a huge jump from Class 3A to 5A, but they should be ready. They return 10 starters on offense (no quarterback) and their entire starting defensive unit. Bravo expects Shaun Maestas, the backup signal-caller last year, to step right in. There are only four seniors in the lineup, led by all-state linebacker/running back Ryan Tuley, who led the team in tackles and was selected the Metro League Defensive Player of the Year. The defense also will receive a huge boost from all-league lineman Devon Bessett, defensive end James Kelly, who was all-league as a freshman, and defensive back D.J. Maestas, Shaun's older brother.

Rocky Mountain News Picks Lightning 6th

Nick Kasa is the cover boy on the 24 page Rocky Mountain News Football Preview Issue - Read Article
Picked by Rocky Preps as favored to win the Front Range title. Here is what they had to say about Legacy.
Legacy, 2007: 9-3; Coach: Wayne Voorhees

The defense, behind All-Colorado end Nick Kasa and all-leaguer Ryan Paulson, will be a plus while the Lightning works on rebuilding the offensive line. Alan Tucker and Shawn Jenkins also will play leading roles here. Leading the way behind them will be linebacker Bo Yurko and defensive backs Ashton Renshaw and Cameron Brown. Getting the offense on track shouldn't take long behind all-league quarterback Luke Bublitz (1,442 yards, 15 TDs) and a solid corps of receivers in Travis Sears, Beau Trigsted, Ryan Coupens and Bryson Romero.

Career Records Could Fall as 2008 Season Begins

Several Legacy High career records are within reach as the talent rich Lightning begin the 2008 season.

Offense (Passing)
After setting single season passing records in yards 1,442 and TD's 15 in 2007, Sr QB Luke Bublitz needs 1,311 yds this year to eclipse Brady Van Sickle's (2000-02) career mark of 2,849 passing yds, and needs 9 TD passes to eclipse Noah Shepard's (2004-04) record of 24. Sitting now at 1,920 yds, Bublitz also has Joey Applehans' Total Offense career mark of 3,401 yds within his reach.
Offense (Receiving)
Mitch Griffin's (2004-04) Lightning career mark of 979 yds recieving is in jeopardy as both Bryson Romero (596 yds) and Travis Sears (374 yds) are within striking distance. Romero is also only two TD's away from breaking Gehrick Dickson's career mark of 11.

Defense (Sacks)
Already the career sack leader with 21.5 sacks Nick Kasa will add to that total in 2008.
Defense (Tackles)
Nick Kasa also has the career tackles record within his reach. Nick comes into the season with 148 career tackles. The current record of 214 is held by Cody Kincaid (2000-03)

44 / 77 He's still the same Nick

In addition to being the No. 1 high school football player / prospect in the state of Colorado Nick Kasa is now one of the most versitile.

Since fall practice has begun the 6' 7" 254 lb defensive terror has also been working at offensive line. This move will mean that Kasa will have to abandon his ever present #44 to #77 for now. Will he be playing both ways? Will he get #44 back to be eligible to catch passes on offense like he did against Mullen in the playoffs? A lot of questions still remain...One thing is clear, Offense or Defense, we are glad Nick is on our side of the ball.
We will keep you upto date on Nicks recruiting progress through the season!
Go 44/77! Go Lightning!

Luke's Back!!!

There was much speculation before the season that our Senior QB Luke Bublitz would not be ready for the 2008 campaign. A partially torn labrum put Luke on the sidelines most of the summer, but back with the team Luke is poised to lead the Lightning again.

Luke's All-District Junior year produced the following numbers:

Att-208 Comp-97 Yds 1,442 TDs-15 Int-4 QB rating 124.82!

With 4 of Luke's top recievers back, the sky is literally the limit for the Lightning air attack in 2008.

Scout.com picks Lightning to win the Front Range League

Jeff Stroud Colordao Prep beat writer for Scout.com picks the Lightning as the favrite to win the Front Range League. Here is the link to the article:

Here is what he says about the Lightning...

Favorite: Legacy Lightning
I have been sitting on this one for a while, primarily to find out about the health of QB Luke Bublitz, who dinged his shoulder this offseason. Lightning head coach Wayne Vorhees says Bublitz, “is good to go. He is excited and ready.” With this news, the Lightning place on the field one of the top combinations of receivers and QB in the state. The strong armed Bublitz, who was an All-League performer last season, will work with H-back Bryson Romero, TE Ryan Coupens and receivers Travis Sears and
Beau Trigsted. This group, along with returning back Jake Levin, combined for nearly 100 catches. The chink in the Legacy armor is the graduation of four starting offensive linemen. Due to these numbers, it is important that key lineman Ryan Lontine helps transition the new crew. The learning curve will need to be a quick one as Legacy comes out of the gate against upstart Mountain Range, scrappy Fort Collins and league contender Rocky Mountain.

Helping ease the pressure on the offense will be an experienced and talented defense. Last season, the Lightning allowed just over two touchdowns a game and should, once again, be able to duplicate those numbers. All discussion of the Legacy D starts up front with super recruit
Nick Kasa. The 6-7 Kasa has added strength to his frame and is now as good against the run as he is against the pass. If that is not enough, Ryan Paulson, a 6-4 230 pound All-Leaguer, works the strong side end position opposite Kasa with a mix of tenacity, smarts and strength. Up the middle, DT Alan Tucker and backers Bo Yurko and Brian Toth will make it tough to run. The defensive backfield should again be solid with the return of Ashton Renshaw and Cam Brown

Finally, the Lightning add one of the top weapons in the state with kicker Kip Smith. The junior makes Legacy a threat to score from the 40 in.

The 29th is coming fast...

Navy Blue & Vegas Gold

The "official" colors of the Legacy Lightning are Navy and Vegas Gold. Does the helmet left look familiar to you? Yes - Notre Dame's colors are also Navy and Vegas Gold and like the Lightning they have gold helmets - a really classy look.

I wonder if Coach V has the Lightning helmets painted with actual gold specs like the Fighting Irish?
