2008 Team Stats: Lightning #1 5A Defense

The #1 Defense in all of Colorado 5A Football - The Legacy Lightning

There is an old football adage that says - Offense gets the headlines, but Defense "Wins Championships". If that is true, then the next 5 weeks will be exciting for Legacy Lightning fans.

There are 48 5A football teams in Colorado, and going into the playoffs this week Legacy has the number one defense in the state giving up only 63 points all year (7 per game avg) and pitching shut outs in 4 of the last 5 games.

The Lightning offense comes into the playoffs ranked #21 putting up 278 points (30.8 per game). In the all important point differential category the top 10 teams are no surprise and represent the teams to watch over the next 5 weeks. The 2008 state champion is most likely in this list...

2008 Final Regular Season Point Differential

1. Montrose +266
2. Poudre +207
3. Grandview +190
4. Pomona +179
5. Legacy +166
6. Mullen +156
7. Cherry Creek +155

Legacy Upends Poudre 21-14 For Big Front Range League Win

With 42 sec left Nick Kasa stops Josh Marton on 4th and one to seal the victory

Down 21-14, it came down to a 4th and one for Poudre at the Lightning 12 yard line with less than a minute left in the game. Josh Marton, the Impala running back would get the call. Before the play Marton had run the ball 42 times for 230 yards. He would end the game with 229 yards on 43 carries, as Nick Kasa split the line and stoned Marton to seal the win.

The hard fought 21-14 win was by far the most exciting with both teams fighting hard and the game in the balance until the final minute. Poudre dominated the time of possesion, but 4 turnovers led directly to both Lightning touchdowns. Bo Yurko scored on the opening series by scooping up a fumble, and an interception late in the game led to a 89 yard Luke Bublitz to Travis Sears TD on a slickly designed stop and go

The (7-1) Lightning end their regular season next Friday at North Stadium against rival Horizon (1-7).

Go Lightning!

Impala Week a Big One For Legacy...

A year ago the Lightning faced off against Poudre with the Front Range Championship on the line. The stakes are just as high this year, but just a little different.

Having beaten both Legacy and Poudre the Front Range title all but belongs to Rocky Mountain. However there is more than just a claim of second place on the line this Friday in Ft. Collins when the Lightning and Impalas do battle. The winner of Fridays contest will most likely gain a higher seed and least one home playoff game in the new CHSAA playoff system.

Redemption from last years devastating loss will surely also be on the Lightnings mind as they travel North for the third time this year. Lightning fans make sure you bring your "A" game to French field this Friday and cheer hard... coach V and the boys will need us Friday night!
