Lightning Penalties Hurting All Phases of The Game

A site all to common for Lightning fans this year

12.5 Penalties for minus 117.5 yards - That is what the Legacy football team is averaging through the first 4 games of the year. A season high of 17 (-164 yds) in the season opener against Mountain Range can be partially excused as opening game jitters, but the Lightning have continued the trend with 10 (-87 yds) against Ft. Collins, 12 (-104 yds) in a loss to Rocky Mountain, and 11 (-115 yds) last week against Northglenn.

Penalties have cost the Lightning in all areas: Special Teams- 2 TD's on punt returns called back, Offense- numerous critical drives stalled, and Defense- given their opponents new life at inopportune times.

Coach Voorhees and the Lightning staff are going to have stress discipline as we move into the second half of the season, with tough league games against Boulder, Fairview and Poudre looming over the next several weeks the Lightning will need as many of those 117 yards back as possible...

Why Lightning Fans Love Zeus...

Separated at Birth

Week 4 Prime Time Players: D..D..D..

On a Night that the Defensive line held Northglenn to 10 yards on the ground and the Lightning LB's and DB's picked off 4 passes - All 11 on the "D" are this weeks "Prime Time Players"

Defensive Line: Nick Kasa (#77) Shawn Jenkins (#72) Alan Tucker (#76) Ryan Paulson (#52) (above)- If there is a better front four in the state they probably play on Saturdays in Boulder. The front 4 of the Lightning completely shut down the Northglenn running attack holding them to 10 yards on 13 carries the ground.

Nate Pickens (#6) (Left) makes a spectacular one handed interception, the first of 2 on the night. Field general Ashton Renshaw (#8) also had one and Corey Ayers (#10) sprinted 60 yards for a Touchdown with another as the Lightning had a total of 4 picks on the night.

LB's Enrique Guerroro (#20), Brian Toth (#40), Kaden Hush (#54) and Corners Alfred Hall (#24) and Cameron Brown (#19) all contributed big time on Thursday night.

Big hits, sacks, and picks were the order of the night as the swarmming Lightning D showed why the entire D deserve to be "Prime Time Players".

Lightning Goes to 3-1 with 23-7 Win Over Northglenn

Soph Corey Ayers #10 and Jr Shawn Jenkins are

The Lightning Defense again showed why it is one of the best in the state Thursday night at North Stadium as the 3-1 Lightning beat Northglenn 23-7 to keep their hopes alive in the 2008 Front Range race.

Legacy next game is homecoming next Friday night at 7:00 PM as the Lightning host a tough Boulder High team.

More on Mesa State Professor's Predictions

For those of us (like me) that scoffed at Professor Erik Packard's Colorado High School "Power Rankings" and "Predictor" - click here - We are not laughing now!

Take a look at Professor Packard's Front Range League predictions from this weekend. He was 5 for 5 and his point spread predictions are down right scary....

Rocky Mnt over Legacy 34-14 actual 22-10
Boulder over Ft. Collins 18-12 actual 26-3
Poudre over Horizon 33-9 actual 35-13
Fairview over Mnt Range 44-9 actual 31-28
Stnd Lake over Northglenn 22-10 actual 29-6

I have no idea what to say about that except that we will be looking at Professor Packard's Front Range Predictions every week from now on...

Lightning Unveil New "White on White" Look

The Lightning Unveiled Their New "White on White" Look on Friday night

Rocky Mountain may have beat the Lightning 22-10 on the scoreboard on Friday night, but not in the fashion department. Normally in a Navy pant with white jerseys the Lightning wore georgeous white pants (with the Lightning bolt logo in front) on Friday. There is not a better look in Colorado HS football.

The Navy and Vegas Gold never looked better....

Week Three Prime Time Player - Colton Chavez

One player stood out for the Lightning on Friday night. On a night that the passing game was off and the defense gave up almost 400 yards of offense to just one player. Colton Chavez's 134 yards on the ground was a lone bright spot.

Colton Chavez rushed 24 times for 134 yards for the Lightning Friday night

After three games the Legacy offense has not shown much "Lightning". The one shinning light has been the consistency of the running of Colton Chavez. Against Mountain Range in the opener Chavez ran for 95 yards on 13 carries. He followed that up with 90 yards on 24 carries against Ft. Collins, and last night he topped the century mark with 134 yards on another 24 carry night.

Congratulations Colton... Keep it up...

Woulda - Shoulda - Coulda - 3 Big Plays Define Lightning Loss

Big players make big plays in big games... Thats exactly what happenned in Friday nights game against the Rocky Mountain Lobos

PLAY 1 - Tipped Ball Turns into Big Gainer

With the Lobos leading 6-0 and facing a third down, the Lightning's Nate Pickens breaks up a pass intended Michael Liss. The ball squirts in the air and is picked up by Lobo TE Dawit Assefa who rambles down inside the 10 yard line to set up a FG.

PLAY 2 - Near Sack / Pick Turns into First Down

On the Lobos next possession they were backed up deep in their own territorry when Nick Kasa hit Lobo QB Bryan Peters forcing a bad pass that just hung in the air. As Lightning corner Cameron Brown is coming down with his 3rd interception of the year, all-world WR Jake Stewart comes back and not only breaks up the interception but is given the ball on a "joint catch" call.

PLAY 3 - Fumbled Snap on 10yd line Turns into TD

Quarterback Bryan Peters pulls off the "Play of the Year" for the Lobo's. As the 3rd qtr comes to an end the Lightning closed the score to 17-10 and have the Lobo's on the ropes as Peters fumbles shotgun snap inside his own 10 yd line. As Nick Kasa and the Lightning D rush in, not only does Peters avoid the sack deep in his own end, he breaks multiple tackles and sprints 90 plus yards for a 79 yd TD to put the game out of reach.
Sometimes you simply have to take your hats off to your competitors. Rocky Mountain played Friday nights game with spirit and emotion. Their students, crowd, and band were all into the game, loud and an assett to their team, and their BIG PLAYERS made BIG PLAYS.
Hopefully we will see them again in the playoffs...

Rocky Mountain Beats Sluggish Lightning 22-10 in Area Game of the Week

Down 9-3 at halftime, Coach Voorhees and the Lightning coaches re-group

High hopes for a record season for the Legacy high football team took a detour Friday night at French field in Ft. Collins as QB Bryan Peters and the Rocky Mountain Lobos humbled the Lightning 22-10.

Accounting for almost 400 yards by himself, Peters threw for 2 TD's and ran 78 yards on a thrilling scramble for a third. For the third game in a row the Lightning defense did its best to hold on as the offense sputtered to get life fighting through penalties and sloppy play. With a strong Front Range schedule looming it is time for a reality check at 136th & Zuni in Broomfield.

Look for Coach V and the boys to bounce back strongly next Thursday night at North Stadium against Northglenn.

Lightning Stats - None better in the Country

The Legacy High football statistics are prepared by and distributed by Legacy math teacher Douglas Dietel. For many who have seen the work that Mr. Dietel does the reaction is the same... There just are no better or accurate high school football statistics anywhere.

Working with game film and the coaching staff Mr. Dietel has been the statmaster for years at Legacy and his work is awesome. Click Here to see the recently published stats for the opener against Mountain Range.

Thanks Mr. Dietel for a wonderful service to the Lightning football program. Please see Mr. Dietel's website for all of the Lightning Stats. http://legacy.adams12.org/webpages/Dietel/

Mesa State Professor Publishes "Power Rankings" Has Lightning Ranked 40th and Predicts Rocky Mountain Upset

Mesa State Math Professor Erik Packard (a PhD in Mathematics from Texas Tech University)has created a computer "Power Ranking" system that ranks all 288 high school football teams in Colorado. After week 2 Professor Packard's system has the Legacy Lightning ranked 40th just behind 3A Roosevelt.

Click Here to go to Professor Packard's site. You can see the rankings and input any 2 teams in the state and get a prediction for the game. Things don't look good for the Lightning in Ft. Collins tonight as Professor Packard's computer predicts Rocky Mountain to destroy Legacy 34-14.

Good thing for Coach V and the boys Packard's PhD is only from Texas Tech...

Week Two Prime Time Players - Dynamic Duo's

Teamwork pays off as 3 Lightning Dynamic Duo's - "The Bookends" , "The Combo" and the "Setup Men" work together to help the Lightning go to 2-0.

"The Bookends"
Defensive Ends Sr.s Ryan Paulson and Nick Kasa - shown here sacking Ft. Collin's QB Cody Donaldson are always a force. Official numbers are not in yet but it looked like a 4 1/2 sack night between them. The Bokends relentless pressure kept the Lightning in the game on Friday Night.

"The Combo"
Both times the Lightning needed big plays they got them from Luke Bublitz to Bryson Romero. Scoring on strikes from 38 yds(shown right) in the first half and 36 yds in the second, this dynamic duo is the leading TD combination in Legacy History.

"The Setup Men"
In a game of field position time and time again the dynamic duo of Beau Trigsted and Ashton Renshaw made big plays on special teams setting up drives. Ashton (left) leads Beau on a 45 yd Kickoff return with the score tied and 5 min. left setting up the winning score.

Lightning Beats Lambkins 19-13 to go to 2-0

Legacy DE Bookends Ryan Paulson and Nick Kasa pressure Ft. Collins QB Cody Donaldson

As Reported in the Coloradan by Hap Fry

WESTMINSTER - Caleb Spaulding emerged from the North Field locker room Friday night with this proclamation.

"Man, it was a lot of fun out there," he said.
Spaulding's definition of fun probably differs from most. After all, the Fort Collins High School junior banged heads with some of the biggest offensive and defensive linemen the state has to offer in Legacy.

But Spaulding and his teammates learned Friday that they can stand toe-to-toe with anyone.
Fort Collins nearly pulled off the upset but fell short against Legacy, losing 19-13. "You don't want to ever say you're happy after a loss, but I'm just so proud of how the kids played," Fort Collins coach Eric Rice said. "They stayed with it and just kept battling. I really feel good about this."

Legacy (2-0, 2-0 Front Range League) entered the season as the prohibitive favorite to win the FRL and also features the state's top recruit in 6-foot-7, 255 pound offensive/defensive lineman Nick Kasa. Kasa was a fixture in the Fort Collins' offensive backfield, but he knows that the Lightning must make improvements to realize its ultimate goal of winning a league and state title. "It shouldn't have been this tough," Kasa said. "We should have done a lot better, especially on offense. We did not play our best."

That might be true, but Fort Collins' defense deserves a lot of credit for forcing the Lightning to punt six times.

Sophomore cornerback Jade Ariaz returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown to give Fort Collins (1-1, 1-1 FRL) a 6-0 lead with 5 minutes, 37 seconds left in the second quarter.
Legacy countered on the very next possession with a 38-yard TD pass from Luke Bublitz to Bryson Romero to take a 7-6 lead. It was a prelude of things to come.

With the game tied 13-13, Bublitz and Romero struck again with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter, this time on a 36-yard TD pass that gave the Lightning the lead for good.

"I was thinking it never should have come down to this, and then I started thinking that we had to make a big play," Romero said. "I was supposed to run this funky banana route and end up right in the end zone. Luke threw this perfect pass right over the cornerback's head, and it worked out perfectly."

Fort Collins was able to tie the game 13-13 thanks two big plays from quarterback Cody Donaldson. The senior quarterback zigged-and-zagged his way for 48 yards on the first play and then hit a diving Chris Ranglos with a 10-yard TD pass four plays later on fourth down to tie the game 13-13 with 5:05 left.

Fort Collins had another chance to tie or win the game with under two minutes to play after forcing and recovering a fumble.

Donaldson hit Andre Alvarez with a 22-yard pass to put the Lambkins in Legacy territory. But four plays later, on fourth-and-four, Chris Ranglos was stopped two yards short of the first down to end Fort Collins' comeback hopes.

"They were (blitzing), and we had a screen called," Rice said of the fourth down play. "We were a shoestring tackle away from having a chance to win the game. But shoulda, coulda, wouldas will kill you. If you say those a bunch, you end up having a 2-8 season.

After Friday night, it does not appear a 2-8 season is on the horizon for the Lambkins.
"There were so many guys who stepped up," Donaldson. "It's disappointing that we came up short, but we gained a lot of confidence. We're all ready to go next week for Boulder."

Week 2: Ft. Collins - Here Come The Lambkins

The Lightning get their second league game in as many weeks at the Lambkins come to town to take on the Lightning at North Stadium Friday night. What kind of a nickname is the "Lambkins" anyway?
Coach Eric Rice's team will roll into North stadium Friday night with a 1-0 record after beating Northglenn last week. Here's what the Denver Post said about the Lambkins...
FORT COLLINS LAMBKINS
Coach: Eric Rice 2007 record: 3-7
Returning starters: Five offense, three defense
Last playoff appearance: 2007, lost 28-15 to Mountain Vista in second round
Strengths: Improved lower ranks
Weaknesses: Voids in size and depth; new linebackers and secondary
Players to watch: Cole Allenbrand, Jr., DE, 6-1, 185; Andre Alvarez, Sr., Slot, 5-9, 187; Devin Arruabarrena, Sr., DB, 5-10, 175; Cody Donaldson, Sr., QB, 6-1, 170; Colton Richard, Jr., LB, 5-10, 180; Caleb Spaulding, Jr., OL-DL, 6-2 1/2, 236.
In 2008: Lambkins on the climb back to competitiveness, but still working on how to finish.
