Poudre Fights Hard Against Lightning - Coaches Lead By Example
Poudre Head Coach Steve Bradley (right) calls out one of his assistants...
And the fun begins....
No editorial comment needed... except don't kids get suspened for fighting at school?
Season Ends With 3-0 Loss to Poudre in Double OT
In a game that typified the Lightning 2008 season on Friday night, the Legacy defense did everything to win the game except score points.
All night long the Lightning defense came up big shutting down a powerful Poudre offense making big plays while shutting out the Impalas through 4 qtrs. Unfortunately the Lightning offense was again ineffective and could not produce a single point point on the scoreboard in 4 quarters in regulation and 2 possessions from the 10 yard line in overtime.
A sad ending for a team with so much promise...
Still a 9-2 record ties the Lightning all-time record for wins and sets the school record for winning percentage in a season.
Congratulations on a great season Lightning players, coaches and fans...

Poudre Favored in Playoff Game Friday Night - Keys to the game
The reasons very but are fairly consistent...
So here are the keys to the game Friday night...
1. Poudre thinks they should have won 3 weeks ago and will come out looking for revenge... KEY 1 - Can the Lightning play with emotion and fire
2. Stats are not available from last week - but through the first nine games Legacy has averaged 11 penalties a game for almost 100 yards per game. Amazingly against Poudre the first time Legacy had a season low 4 penalites for only 31 yards. KEY 2 - Can the Lightning play disciplined football?
3. 3 weeks ago Poudre's Josh Morton ran in and around the Lightning defense for over 200 yards - KEY 3 - Can the Lightning limit Poudre to less than 100 yards on the ground?
4. It took an 89 yard TD pass with 6 min remaining to beat Poudre 3 weeks ago as the Poudre defense held the Lightning most of the game. KEY 4 Can the inconsistent Lightning offense produce a balanced and explosive offense game plan?
Can the Lightning make it to the State Quarterfinals for the second straight year? Be there Friday night to cheer them on.
Go Lightning!

IT'S POUDRE AGAIN!!!
Next week the 2 Front Range rivals will again square off in a second round playoff game after the the Impalas blew up Gateway 52-8 on Saturday to set up the re-match. The date and time are yet to be announced... Stay tuned - But the game will be played at North Stadium and will be a home game for the Lightning
It took an 89 yard TD pass from Luke Bublitz to Travis Sears on first down following an Aston Renshaw interception to put the Lightning in the lead in the 4th quarter. This will be the last game of the year for one of these great teams. Make your plans for Friday or Saturday next week around this gridiron classic showdown....
Regis Still Shot Video (10/30/2008)
Lightning Escape With First Playoff Win 20-17
It was not supposed to be close, but with 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter the Lightning found themselves down 10-0 and in danger of an upset first round exit from the 2008 state playoffs. Then as if to say "enough already" the Lightning offense grinded out 3 second half touchdowns and held on for an exciting 20-17 victory on Thursday night.
Legacy now 9-1 will face the winner of the Poudre / Gateway matchup next weekend in round 2 of the playoffs. Inconsistent offense and penalties again hurt as the Lightning struggled in the first half.
A win is a win especially in the playoffs, but with possible games with Poudre and ThunderRidge looming time is running short.
Congratulations on a big win to Coach V and the Lightning!

The Raider offense racked up 2119 evenly balanced yards this year (1088 Rushing and 1031 Passing). The Lightning will have to watch for dual threat Quarterback Kevin Flahive-Foro (Sr. 6' 1", 185 lbs) 901 yards passing and 207 yards running.

2008 Team Stats: Lightning #1 5A Defense
There is an old football adage that says - Offense gets the headlines, but Defense "Wins Championships". If that is true, then the next 5 weeks will be exciting for Legacy Lightning fans.
There are 48 5A football teams in Colorado, and going into the playoffs this week Legacy has the number one defense in the state giving up only 63 points all year (7 per game avg) and pitching shut outs in 4 of the last 5 games.
The Lightning offense comes into the playoffs ranked #21 putting up 278 points (30.8 per game). In the all important point differential category the top 10 teams are no surprise and represent the teams to watch over the next 5 weeks. The 2008 state champion is most likely in this list...
2008 Final Regular Season Point Differential
1. Montrose +266
2. Poudre +207
3. Grandview +190
4. Pomona +179
5. Legacy +166
6. Mullen +156
7. Cherry Creek +155
8. Columbine +148
9. Rocky Mountain +144
10. Bear Creek +141

5A Playoff Seeds Set: Lightning to Open up at Home Against Regis Jesuit
Despite a 28-0 win on Friday night the Lightning dropped to a 6th seed and will open up at North Stadium on November 1st against Regis Jesuit (4-5). A win against Regis will set up a likely re-match with Poudre the next week.
Also in the Lightning bracket is undefeated (#2 seed) Rocky Mountain and (#3 Seed) Thunderidge and (#7 Seed) Mullen. Stay tuned for more news on the Lightning 2008 5A State playoff run...

Lightning Ends Regular Season With Another Shutout
The Lightning ended the regular season with a resounding 28-0 shutout of the Horizon Hawks Friday night. Led by Senior QB Luke Bublitz the Ligtning were slow out of the gate but caught fire late in the second period and cruised to their 6th win in a row and 4th shut out of the last 5.
Ranked #5 in the wild card playoff standings going into the game Friday night, the Lightning are hoping to move to a 4th seed. That would ensure a min of 3 home games provided they keep winning.
Stay tuned for updates...

Legacy Upends Poudre 21-14 For Big Front Range League Win
Down 21-14, it came down to a 4th and one for Poudre at the Lightning 12 yard line with less than a minute left in the game. Josh Marton, the Impala running back would get the call. Before the play Marton had run the ball 42 times for 230 yards. He would end the game with 229 yards on 43 carries, as Nick Kasa split the line and stoned Marton to seal the win.
The hard fought 21-14 win was by far the most exciting with both teams fighting hard and the game in the balance until the final minute. Poudre dominated the time of possesion, but 4 turnovers led directly to both Lightning touchdowns. Bo Yurko scored on the opening series by scooping up a fumble, and an interception late in the game led to a 89 yard Luke Bublitz to Travis Sears TD on a slickly designed stop and go
The (7-1) Lightning end their regular season next Friday at North Stadium against rival Horizon (1-7).

Impala Week a Big One For Legacy...
Having beaten both Legacy and Poudre the Front Range title all but belongs to Rocky Mountain. However there is more than just a claim of second place on the line this Friday in Ft. Collins when the Lightning and Impalas do battle. The winner of Fridays contest will most likely gain a higher seed and least one home playoff game in the new CHSAA playoff system.
Redemption from last years devastating loss will surely also be on the Lightnings mind as they travel North for the third time this year. Lightning fans make sure you bring your "A" game to French field this Friday and cheer hard... coach V and the boys will need us Friday night!

BEAU TRIGSTED #80 (Sr. WR) scored the only points in 6-0 game catching a slant pass cutting right and then sprinting 53 yds down the sidelines.

Greeley West Still Shot Video
Lightning Survive against Tough (4A) Greeley West as D Pitches 3rd Consectutive Shutout
For the third consecutive game the Legacy Defense shut out their opponents, last night against a tough Greeley West. Coming into the game ranked #2 in the 4A polls Greeley West threatened several times in the second half, but the Lightning D came up big every time.
The Lightning offense only spark came on a 53 yard catch and run touchdown from Luke Bublitz to Beau Trigsted in the second quarter.
The Lightning travel to Ft. Collins next Friday night to play Poudre 6-1 (6-1) in a battle for second place in the Front Range League.

Lightning Penalties Hurting All Phases of The Game
12.5 Penalties for minus 117.5 yards - That is what the Legacy football team is averaging through the first 4 games of the year. A season high of 17 (-164 yds) in the season opener against Mountain Range can be partially excused as opening game jitters, but the Lightning have continued the trend with 10 (-87 yds) against Ft. Collins, 12 (-104 yds) in a loss to Rocky Mountain, and 11 (-115 yds) last week against Northglenn.
Penalties have cost the Lightning in all areas: Special Teams- 2 TD's on punt returns called back, Offense- numerous critical drives stalled, and Defense- given their opponents new life at inopportune times.
Coach Voorhees and the Lightning staff are going to have stress discipline as we move into the second half of the season, with tough league games against Boulder, Fairview and Poudre looming over the next several weeks the Lightning will need as many of those 117 yards back as possible...

Week 4 Prime Time Players: D..D..D..
Defensive Line: Nick Kasa (#77) Shawn Jenkins (#72) Alan Tucker (#76) Ryan Paulson (#52) (above)- If there is a better front four in the state they probably play on Saturdays in Boulder. The front 4 of the Lightning completely shut down the Northglenn running attack holding them to 10 yards on 13 carries the ground.
Nate Pickens (#6) (Left) makes a spectacular one handed interception, the first of 2 on the night. Field general Ashton Renshaw (#8) also had one and Corey Ayers (#10) sprinted 60 yards for a Touchdown with another as the Lightning had a total of 4 picks on the night.
LB's Enrique Guerroro (#20), Brian Toth (#40), Kaden Hush (#54) and Corners Alfred Hall (#24) and Cameron Brown (#19) all contributed big time on Thursday night.
Big hits, sacks, and picks were the order of the night as the swarmming Lightning D showed why the entire D deserve to be "Prime Time Players".
Lightning Goes to 3-1 with 23-7 Win Over Northglenn
Soph Corey Ayers #10 and Jr Shawn Jenkins are
all smiles after Ayers big Pick 6 on Thursday Night
The Lightning Defense again showed why it is one of the best in the state Thursday night at North Stadium as the 3-1 Lightning beat Northglenn 23-7 to keep their hopes alive in the 2008 Front Range race.
Legacy next game is homecoming next Friday night at 7:00 PM as the Lightning host a tough Boulder High team.

Poudre over Horizon 33-9 actual 35-13
Fairview over Mnt Range 44-9 actual 31-28

Lightning Unveil New "White on White" Look
Rocky Mountain may have beat the Lightning 22-10 on the scoreboard on Friday night, but not in the fashion department. Normally in a Navy pant with white jerseys the Lightning wore georgeous white pants (with the Lightning bolt logo in front) on Friday. There is not a better look in Colorado HS football.
The Navy and Vegas Gold never looked better....
Week Three Prime Time Player - Colton Chavez
After three games the Legacy offense has not shown much "Lightning". The one shinning light has been the consistency of the running of Colton Chavez. Against Mountain Range in the opener Chavez ran for 95 yards on 13 carries. He followed that up with 90 yards on 24 carries against Ft. Collins, and last night he topped the century mark with 134 yards on another 24 carry night.
Congratulations Colton... Keep it up...
Woulda - Shoulda - Coulda - 3 Big Plays Define Lightning Loss
PLAY 1 - Tipped Ball Turns into Big Gainer
Rocky Mountain Beats Sluggish Lightning 22-10 in Area Game of the Week
High hopes for a record season for the Legacy high football team took a detour Friday night at French field in Ft. Collins as QB Bryan Peters and the Rocky Mountain Lobos humbled the Lightning 22-10.
Accounting for almost 400 yards by himself, Peters threw for 2 TD's and ran 78 yards on a thrilling scramble for a third. For the third game in a row the Lightning defense did its best to hold on as the offense sputtered to get life fighting through penalties and sloppy play. With a strong Front Range schedule looming it is time for a reality check at 136th & Zuni in Broomfield.
Look for Coach V and the boys to bounce back strongly next Thursday night at North Stadium against Northglenn.

Week Two Prime Time Players - Dynamic Duo's
Lightning Beats Lambkins 19-13 to go to 2-0
As Reported in the Coloradan by Hap Fry
WESTMINSTER - Caleb Spaulding emerged from the North Field locker room Friday night with this proclamation.
"Man, it was a lot of fun out there," he said.
Spaulding's definition of fun probably differs from most. After all, the Fort Collins High School junior banged heads with some of the biggest offensive and defensive linemen the state has to offer in Legacy.
But Spaulding and his teammates learned Friday that they can stand toe-to-toe with anyone.
Fort Collins nearly pulled off the upset but fell short against Legacy, losing 19-13. "You don't want to ever say you're happy after a loss, but I'm just so proud of how the kids played," Fort Collins coach Eric Rice said. "They stayed with it and just kept battling. I really feel good about this."
Legacy (2-0, 2-0 Front Range League) entered the season as the prohibitive favorite to win the FRL and also features the state's top recruit in 6-foot-7, 255 pound offensive/defensive lineman Nick Kasa. Kasa was a fixture in the Fort Collins' offensive backfield, but he knows that the Lightning must make improvements to realize its ultimate goal of winning a league and state title. "It shouldn't have been this tough," Kasa said. "We should have done a lot better, especially on offense. We did not play our best."
That might be true, but Fort Collins' defense deserves a lot of credit for forcing the Lightning to punt six times.
Sophomore cornerback Jade Ariaz returned an interception 24 yards for a touchdown to give Fort Collins (1-1, 1-1 FRL) a 6-0 lead with 5 minutes, 37 seconds left in the second quarter.
Legacy countered on the very next possession with a 38-yard TD pass from Luke Bublitz to Bryson Romero to take a 7-6 lead. It was a prelude of things to come.
With the game tied 13-13, Bublitz and Romero struck again with 3:08 left in the fourth quarter, this time on a 36-yard TD pass that gave the Lightning the lead for good.
"I was thinking it never should have come down to this, and then I started thinking that we had to make a big play," Romero said. "I was supposed to run this funky banana route and end up right in the end zone. Luke threw this perfect pass right over the cornerback's head, and it worked out perfectly."
Fort Collins was able to tie the game 13-13 thanks two big plays from quarterback Cody Donaldson. The senior quarterback zigged-and-zagged his way for 48 yards on the first play and then hit a diving Chris Ranglos with a 10-yard TD pass four plays later on fourth down to tie the game 13-13 with 5:05 left.
Fort Collins had another chance to tie or win the game with under two minutes to play after forcing and recovering a fumble.
Donaldson hit Andre Alvarez with a 22-yard pass to put the Lambkins in Legacy territory. But four plays later, on fourth-and-four, Chris Ranglos was stopped two yards short of the first down to end Fort Collins' comeback hopes.
"They were (blitzing), and we had a screen called," Rice said of the fourth down play. "We were a shoestring tackle away from having a chance to win the game. But shoulda, coulda, wouldas will kill you. If you say those a bunch, you end up having a 2-8 season.
After Friday night, it does not appear a 2-8 season is on the horizon for the Lambkins.
"There were so many guys who stepped up," Donaldson. "It's disappointing that we came up short, but we gained a lot of confidence. We're all ready to go next week for Boulder."
